What is BAI or Body Adiposity Index?

Body Adiposity Index (BAI) is a percentage of body fat calculated by dividing a person’s hip circumference by their height. It is calculated by using a simple formula which requires you hip and height measurements. Based on a chart or formula, the resulting value is then used to estimate the person’s body fat percentage.

It should be noted that the BAI is only an estimate of body fat percentage and should not be used as a diagnostic tool. If you are concerned about your body fat percentage or overall health, consult with a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation.

How to Use BAI Calculator

  • Using this tool, you can easily calculate your body adiposity index.
  • Simply choose your height from the dropdown menu and enter your waist circumference in centimetres.
  • The calculator will calculate your BAI based on the values you enter.

Formula to Calculate BAI

Below formula can be used to calculate your body adiposity index.

When using the above BAI formula, remember to enter the hip circumference in centimetres and the height in metres. Even if you’ve taken measurements in different units, convert them to cm and m before using this formula.

How Does Body Adiposity Index Work

Body Adiposity Index (BAI) is a percentage of body fat calculated from a person’s hip circumference to height. It is manually calculated using the aforementioned formula.

If a person’s hip circumference is 102 centimetres and their height is 1.8 metres, their BAI is calculated as follows:

BAI = {102/ (1.81.5)} – 18
BAI = 24.24%

Once you have calculated your BAI, refer to below table to check your weight status.

Based on a above chart or formula, the resulting value is then used to estimate the person’s body fat percentage. BAI is regarded as a simple and dependable method of estimating body fat percentage, and it has been shown to be highly correlated with more complex and precise methods of measuring body fat.

Body Adiposity Index Normal Range

The normal range for Body Adiposity Index (BAI) varies by age, gender, and ethnicity. A lower BAI is generally associated with a lower body fat percentage, whereas a higher BAI is associated with a higher body fat percentage.

The following ranges are generally considered to be within the normal range for BAI in adults:

Women: 18-25%
Men: 8-20%
