Percentage

Percentage is abbreviated as percent, or percent. This symbol is created by rearranging the numbers 1 and 00.

The term “percentage” refers to the number “out of 100.” For example, 85% denotes a score of 85 out of 100, which may be stated as a fraction 85/100.

Fraction

A fraction is a number formed by the ratio of two integers. If n and d are two integers, then n/d is a fraction as long as d is not equal to zero; otherwise, the fraction is undefined. Fractions can be both positive and negative.

The numerator is the highest number in a fraction, while the denominator is the lowest. The fraction is incorrect if the numerator is greater than the denominator.

Formula to Convert Percentage to Fraction

There is a formula for converting a fraction to a percentage value, but there isn’t one for converting a percentage value to a fraction. There are various steps required to convert each sort of percentage value (decimal percentage, whole number percentage, etc.) into a fraction.

But don’t worry, we have solved examples for converting the percentage value to a fraction below. The examples for each type of percentage value have been resolved.

Solved Examples

We have solved the examples below that show how to convert a percentage to a fraction. Both cases where the percentage value is a whole number and a decimal is converted to a fraction.

If the percentage value is a whole number

Example

1. Convert 15% into a fraction.

Solution

The percentage value must be positioned above 100 as a first step. No matter how large a percentage number you obtain, simply keep it above 100 and then simplify or reduce the numbers to their lowest terms.

15/100

Now that we have the value in a fraction, try to simplify it in the lowest possible term. To do this, divide the denominator and numerator by 5.

If you find it difficult to divide the numbers, we have made a simple dividing fractions calculator which could make your job a lot easier.

If you struggle to divide the numbers, this simple dividing fractions calculator for splitting fractions may greatly simplify your task.

15/100 = 3/20

If the percentage value is a decimal number

Example

2. Convert 87.5% into a fraction.

Solution

Since the % figure in this example is a decimal, the stages are slightly different. As we did in the last example, start by placing the decimal percentage value above 100.

87.5/100

Now that the value resembles a fraction, the next step is to multiply the numerator and denominator by 10, which will eliminate the decimal and give us a whole number.

87.5/100 × 10/10 = 875/1000

Now that we have the value in a fraction, try to simplify it in the lowest possible term. To do this, divide the denominator and numerator by 5.

875/1000 = 175/200

Simplify again until we get to the lowest value by dividing the numerator and denominator by 5.

175/200 = 35/40

This appears to be in the lowest term, but we can divide it by 5 to make it even more reduced term.

35/40 = 7/8
