If the addition of 2 angles result as 360°, then they can be called as conjugate angles. Using a weighing scale as an example, you may better understand the concept of conjugate angle.

When a person steps on the scale, the pointer rotates around the scale at an angle of a. The pointer will be back at the top of the scale if it turns through ‘a’ further angle ‘b’. Because the two angles ‘a’ and ‘b’ total up to 360 degrees, they are conjugate angles.

How to Calculate Conjugate Angles

We’ve seen that two conjugate angles add up to 360 degrees (i.e., x + y = 360°). Calculating the conjugate angle is not difficult at all. To find it, simply subtract the angle value from 360°. For example, to calculate the conjugate angle of 120°, simply subtract it from 360°, i.e 360°- 120° = 240°. Below we have some more solved examples to clear your doubts.

Example

1. Find the value of the angle X in the following figure.

conjugate angles

Solution :

We all know that the conjugate angles add up to 360°, so subtract 260° from 360° to find the conjugate angle.

Using the conjugate angles formula,

Conjugate Angle (X) = 360° – angle
Conjugate Angle (X) = 360° – 260°
Conjugate Angle (X) = 100°

The value of angle X is 100°.

Example

2. Find the conjugate angle of 75°

Solution :

Using the conjugate angle formula,

Conjugate Angle = 360° – angle
Conjugate Angle = 360° – 75°
Conjugate Angle = 285°

The conjugate angle of 75° is 285°
